The Thread

I have just finished reading The Thread by Victoria Hyslop, which I enjoyed. It tells the story of  Thessaloniki from World War 1 to the present day, it features on a couple of families and their stories of love, hardship, loyalty amid the turmoils of life. Its main character is Katerina, who is a great seamstress and of her life. I won't go into too much detail in case you want to read it yourself.

While I enjoyed the book I did not think it was as good as her first novel, The Island, which was a great read. This one was a bit slow at times I thought.

I have just joined a Book Club so my next book to read is Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey.

Have you read any good books recently?

I don't know why I've not read any Hislop- and certainly this one has been highly recommended by a few friends. I think I'm afraid of it turning out to be facile? I've just read Birds without Wings which maybe deals with similar issues, but tackles them with depth and richness. Snow Child is apparently beautifully written, but again I'm afraid of it- this time because I avoid stories with distressing children things! I do have a copy of it- was thinking it would do a winter giveaway in a few seasons! That might be too late for your book club though! My book club's next read is All the Beggars Riding- if you'd like some Belfast reading!
